What determines whether a swing gate performs correctly over time:

• Post sizing and embedment: A swing gate transfers its full weight to the hinge post on every cycle. The post needs to be sized for that cantilever load — not defaulted to the same diameter as the fence line posts — and set in concrete at a depth that prevents movement under years of cyclic loading. A gate post that shifts one degree changes the hinge geometry enough to create binding and accelerated wear on the operator
• Gate frame construction: Residential swing gate frames are built from steel tube — typically 2-inch or 2.5-inch square — welded at the corners and diagonally braced to prevent racking. The diagonal brace is not decorative; it is what keeps the gate square under its own weight over time. Frames without it sag at the latch end
• Swing radius clearance: The gate needs enough driveway depth behind it to complete the full swing without contacting the vehicle pulling through. On sloped driveways — common throughout Cherokee and Forsyth counties — the arc of the gate relative to the grade has to be calculated, not assumed

Slide Gates

A slide gate moves laterally along a track or cantilever roller system rather than arcing through a swing radius. Key considerations:

• Track vs. cantilever: Track-driven slide gates use a bottom rail set in the driveway surface — functional and cost-effective but vulnerable to debris accumulation and damage from vehicle tires drifting over the track. Cantilever slide gates are supported entirely by roller carriages on a counterbalanced frame, with no track in the ground — the preferred specification on residential properties where driveway surface integrity and low maintenance are priorities
• Slide clearance: A slide gate requires open fence line equal to the gate width plus operator and end stop clearance alongside the driveway. On narrow lots where that space is constrained, slide gate geometry needs to be confirmed at the site visit before it is specified
• Gate weight and roller specification: Slide gate roller carriages are rated by gate weight. Heavier ornamental steel gates require heavier-duty carriages than aluminum or chain link frames — specifying residential-grade hardware on a heavy gate produces accelerated wear and eventual failure of the roller system

Gate Materials

• Ornamental steel: The heaviest and most structurally substantial option. • Vinyl: Vinyl-framed gates are available and appropriate for matching vinyl fence systems, with the same caveat as wood — internal steel reinforcement is required in any vinyl gate frame that will bear swing or slide load over time

Gate Automation & Operators

An automated gate operator converts a manually operated gate into a system — and the system is only as reliable as its weakest component. • Power supply: Hardwired 110V or 220V operators are the standard on residential installations with power available at the gate location.
